Pregnancy is one of the most magical (and fleeting) seasons of life. Your body is growing an entire human, your heart is already in love with someone you haven’t met yet, and everything feels a little bit surreal. A maternity photoshoot is the perfect way to freeze this moment in time. When you book with Boston Baby, it becomes more than just photos. It becomes an experience you’ll look back on with the same warm glow you feel right now.
Here’s my ultimate guide to planning and rocking your maternity session with Boston Baby (based on years of watching my clients absolutely glow).
1. When to Book and When to Shoot
The sweet spot for maternity photos is between 28–34 weeks. You’re beautifully round, you (usually) still have decent energy, and baby hasn’t dropped so low that you’re waddling everywhere yet.
I book up fast so reach out as soon as you have your due date (even in your first trimester). I will pencil you in and adjust as needed if baby decides to cook a little longer.
2. Choose Your Style.
I can adjust almost anything to fit a vibe you're looking for so be sure to search up images that make you happy and I will do my best to make it happen
Studio Sessions – Clean, timeless, emotional. Think flowing gowns against seamless backdrops, soft window light, and that iconic silhouette shot. My Groveland studio is warm, private, and stocked with a client-wardrobe gowns (yes, you can just show up in yoga pants and leave looking like a goddess).
3. The Client Closet Is a Game-Changer
Forget stressing about what to wear. Boston Baby’s client closet is stocked with everything we need. Maternity gowns in many colors and silhouette.
4. How to Actually Feel Like Yourself (and Gorgeous) on Camera
I am basically a hype-women with cameras. I'll pose you in the most flattering ways, but more importantly, I'll get you laughing, relaxed, and in the moment. Some of my secret weapons:
A playlist of your favorite songs playing in studio
Having your partner whisper ridiculous things in your ear between shots
Tiny prompts like “tell him what you’re most excited to teach the baby” that create real emotion
Clients always say, “I was so nervous, but 10 minutes in I forgot there was a camera.”
5. Including Partners & Siblings
Boston Baby excels at making everyone feel included without it feeling forced. Some of the most tear-jerking images are:
Partner kissing your bare belly while you both cry-laugh
Toddler siblings listening to the heartbeat
Ultrasound photos held up next to the bump
6. Hair & Makeup—Just Do It
Book the artist Boston Baby recommends (they have a few incredible HMUA partners). Pregnancy glow is real, but professional airbrush makeup and soft waves take it to another level—and you’ll feel like a celebrity. Plus, no dark circles from that 3 a.m. heartburn.
7. What to Bring (and What NOT to Worry About)
Bring:
Water & snacks (they have some, but your cravings rule)
Nude strapless bra & seamless underwear
Any sentimental items (sonogram, baby booties, heirloom blanket)
Lip gloss for touch-ups
Leave at home:
Your worry about stretch marks (I edit tastefully or celebrate them—your choice)
Fear of feeling huge (I’ll make you feel like a fertile goddess)
8. The Reveal Session—Prepare to Ugly-Cry
About 2–3 weeks later, you’ll come back for your in-person ordering appointment. You’ll walk into my studio once again with lights dim, music swells, and your slideshow starts. Bring tissues. Every single client cries happy tears. This is when you choose your favorites for albums, wall art, and digitals. (Pro tip: most people spend more than they planned because the images are that good.)
Final Thought
Your maternity photos aren’t just pictures—they’re the very first chapter of your baby’s life story. Years from now, when your kid asks, “What was it like when I was in your belly?” you’ll pull out that album and say, “Look how excited we were to meet you.”
I don't just take beautiful photos. Icapture the love, the anticipation, the pure miracle of this season. And they make the whole experience feel like a celebration instead of a photoshoot.
