The importance of a maternity session
When Should You Book Your Boston Maternity Photoshoot? A Complete Timing Guide
Pregnancy flies by faster than most expectant mothers expect. Between doctor appointments, nursery planning, and the general whirlwind of emotions, it’s easy for a maternity photoshoot to slip down the priority list—until suddenly you’re 35 weeks pregnant and realize you want beautiful professional images to remember this chapter. The single most common regret I hear from clients is “I wish I had booked earlier.” Here’s exactly when and why you should secure your maternity session to avoid that regret.
The sweet spot for almost every maternity portrait session is between 28 and 34 weeks—roughly the beginning of the third trimester up until about 7.5–8 months. At this stage:
Your bump is beautifully round and prominent (no longer “is she pregnant or did she just eat a big lunch?”). Most women still feel relatively energetic and mobile. Swelling in feet, hands, and face is usually minimal. You’re far enough from your due date that preterm labor is less of a concern. After 35 weeks, many mothers experience more fatigue, back pain, rib discomfort, and swelling that can make posing for an hour or more feel challenging. While I happily photograph clients up to 38 or even 39 weeks if they’re feeling great, the majority prefer the look and comfort level of the 30–33-week range.
Book at Least 2–3 Months in Advance (Ideally by 16–20 Weeks)
I book out 8–12 weeks ahead, especially for weekend dates and peak seasons (spring and fall tend to be the busiest). That means the best time to secure your spot is actually in your second trimester—around 16–20 weeks—when you’ve hopefully moved past morning sickness and have some energy back.
Booking early gives you:
First choice of dates before the calendar fills, Peace of mind that one big thing is checked off your list, Time to plan announcements, baby shower dates, or gender reveals around your session, Flexibility if you need to reschedule due to anatomy scans or unexpected rest requirements, If you’re already past 20 weeks, don’t panic—reach out anyway. I do keep a few last-minute slots or maintain cancellation lists.
Why My Clients Love Knowing Wardrobe Is Provided
One of the biggest stressors for pregnant moms is figuring out what to wear that flatters a changing body. That’s why I include a full client wardrobe with every maternity session at no additional charge. I have multiple styles to choose from and also use fabrics to create the illusion of a gown. Styles range from romantic and ethereal to sleek and modern. You simply show up, try on what speaks to you, and I handle the rest (steaming, styling, and even clipping or pinning for the perfect fit). No shopping, no stress, no worrying about whether something will still fit in two months.
How Long Will the Session Last?
Most of my standard maternity sessions run 45–75 minutes, though the exact length depends on the package you choose:
Ultimate Maternity: 60–75 minutes, 2-3 outfit changes in studio
Petite Maternity: 30–60 minutes, 1–2 looks, perfect for bump-only portraits
We never rush. There’s always time for bathroom breaks, snack breaks, or simply sitting down when you need to rest your feet.
Final Timeline Recommendation
12–16 weeks: reach out and say hi!
16–20 weeks: Book your session and reserve your date
28–34 weeks: Have your portraits taken while you’re glowing and comfortable
37+ weeks: Receive your gallery and order heirloom albums or wall art before baby arrives
Your pregnancy only happens once for each child. These portraits become some of the most treasured images a family owns—often displayed long after the baby has grown. Booking early ensures you capture this season exactly the way you envision, without compromise.
Ready when you are—most of my clients secure their date the same week they see that positive test start showing. We can’t wait to celebrate this chapter with you.
